When people think of financial services, a typical image of men in suits around a boardroom table often comes to mind. While this has been the traditional face of the industry. As a female Independent Financial Adviser at David Allen Financial Services, I am incredibly proud to be part of a team that champions diversity and growth. The number of women working as financial advisers is rising and I am one of the growing numbers of female independent financial advisers making a real impact in the sector.

Research shows that 16% of financial advisers in the UK are women, a figure significantly lower than the number of doctors with over 48% of registered doctors in the UK are women and in GP surgeries across the UK this figure rises to 56%. However, as the financial services industry progresses, more women are advancing into advisory roles. Keith Richards, Chief Executive of the Personal Finance Society explains this has come from a greater emphasis placed on the role of back-office staff and the emergence of paraplanning as a professional role which attracts more young women into the sector, some of whom go on to qualify in advisory roles.

Looking back, I wish I had someone to guide me in my early years about the importance of retirement planning—something I now strive to do for my clients.
